Looking back into the past when the early cavemen discovered fire and thus ushered in a new era of civilization makes me ponder on how should a sustained civilized interaction with food be in the next ten to twenty years from now? The kitchen which has been evolving unnoticed since the dawn of civilization albeit shadowed by the other much voluminous industrial growth world over makes me wonder - would people expect new healthy experiences in a future kitchen?
A fast paced society, result oriented and driven to meeting deadlines and targets seem to be the world of future. Any proposal deemed to be healthy for interaction with food in the Future Kitchen would be one wherein convergence of changing home environments and family habits aided with new developing technologies would occur that help enhance not only the various kitchen activities to deliver the defined type of food at the defined time and quality may it be for/by an individual/family but also help redefine people's attitude towards such activities and thereby enable the individual/family a joyful experience manifestation driven by a sense of self satisfaction and pleasure imbibed with confidence and renewed vigor when in the act of taking time out to preparing food and surely not a stressful situation caused by the difficulty in defining what meal to prepare and by a rising sense of anxiety for not being able to prepare the meal in time and at the required quality level. Hence presenting this post on 'Future Kitchen' designed around 'Vastu Shashtra' an ancient Indian science of Building Construction to overcome any such future kitchen issues.
Envisioning the interaction with food in the future so that people could prepare healthy, perfectly made meals conveniently while having less and less time to dedicate towards meal preparation aided with advancing technology so that people then in their daily lives could accomplish their day to day tasks faster and easier with great cooking results however seems apprehensive now as against the possible realization of such a vision's success then in the future. What role would technology play in this search for a future way of interacting with food preparation, preservation and cleaning? Thinking about the new home environments and the new user habits even the forever changing technology enabled kitchen environments would not be able to fit into the conventional constructional design of the entire house (i.e. with the kitchen as an integral and inseparable important portion of the entire house) in totality. Such obsolete constructions aided with sporadic changes in technology no doubt helps in the least food preparation, preservation and cleaning activities when tomorrow more important would be the requirement for well being of the individual/s in the house during their interaction with food in the 'Future Kitchen'. The answer to this is 'Vastu Shashtra' or 'Art of Building Construction' an ancient Indian treatise for healthy living through healthy dwelling. A healthy dwelling therefore promotes healthy outcomes in not only kitchen tasks but any tasks undertaken. A feedback thus obtained post such successful tasks pertaining to the undergone tasks environments/constraints may then be utilized to effect the future needed technologies that could aid such kitchen tasks/any task management activities and their completion to be more amicable.
So how much useful is 'Vastu Shashtra'? In the Indian context, ancient treatises on science of life more appropriate to call them the science of living and living healthy or for that matter dwelling need to be addressed along with the logic behind them. These are part of the vedic scriptures. Ayurveda for example, essentially a science of healing, concentrates on the techniques of living a healthy normal life. The universe according to this Indian thinking is composed of the five basic elements viz. the Panch Mahabhootas i.e. earth, water, fire, air and ether (or space). The human body being similarly constituted, there is a fundamental harmony between the universe and man; a healthy balance between the microcosm and macrocosm. Ayurveda believes in the theory of what is known as Tridoshas (or three doshas): Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata is a combination of the two elements of the universe viz. air and ether; Pitta an amalgam of fire and earth and Kapha the combination of ether and water. According to this theory, the tridoshas are in balance in the human body and when that balance is disturbed, a disease (physical or emotional) is born.
Extrapolating the above information pertaining to the microcosm events to the larger macrocosm events or vice-versa wherein any disturbance in the balance of the five basic elements in the surrounding (society) caused by natural/man-made reasons due to any unhealthy indulgences would be justifiable enough to affect a large scale magnitude calamity in the human body (individual/s) too. Thus seeking compatibility in the five basic elements of the individual/s (microcosm) with the five basic elements in and around the would be house on a plot of land by manifesting a sustained balancing of the imbalance in the five basic elements inherent in and around the plot of land (macrocosm) during the construction phase itself or to seek the same in a fully constructed house (macrocosm) would seemingly be the main essence of Vastu Shashtra as a dwelling thus designed/sought could be tailor-made through this ancient treatise for enabling the concerned individual/s to live in harmony with nature. Any imbalance brought into such a house would on account of appropriate construction patterns/channels via. the Vastu Shashtra principles could be diverted/drained away from the house similar to the flood waters when channeled via. appropriate canals towards the oceans away from the landmass. Borrowing from this treatise on ancient science of healing, the methodology for future kitchen experience could be proposed based on the same five elements viz. earth, water, fire, wind and ether (or space) as shown in the Figure1. To explain the cause and effect of external shock event and its outcomes on the individual/s, the five basic elements are arranged so as to form a system (i.e. individual/s) as shown in the Figure2. Any change in the surrounding (society) affects the system (i.e. individual/s) or vice-versa. Thus, negative effect is offset when the system brings them from the surrounding and comes home (i.e. Vastu Shashtra enabled homes). Similarly, the positive effect inside the house gets spread into the surrounding when the system moves outside the house for pursuing his/her day to day activities.
Figures1 and 2 represents the methodology based on the five elements which are common to any animate/inanimate beings (microcosm) and for the surrounding/universe (macrocosm). The three elements viz. earth, water and fire within the ether/space element (together that form a System) are in continuous interaction with the air element. It is this air element that connects the concerned system with the external surrounding and hence any imbalance in the external surrounding regions, say from any remote system is transmitted to this system and the same is true vice-versa. Air can aid fire, can carry water and displace earth. Ether/space refers to the spatial constraints the three elements i.e. earth, water and fire have in the system which in the event of their imbalance are seemingly encroached upon the empty ether/space element and/or on themselves via. displacement of the other.
So the conclusion deduced is; Vastu Shashtra enables an individual to dwell at peace in his/her home when a few minutes back outside the home the same person would not have been in his real true self. A person not in his real good self, no matter how advanced his/her home and kitchen be with sophisticated technological devices to prepare food, preserve them and clean left overs would never get destressed as compared to a person dwelling in a house with a Future Kitchen entirely designed around Vastu Shashtra.
