“Vision: To
usher a green balanced environment”
“Mission: Adopt
green kitchens forever”
Need I start
the post with the ongoing issues world over on climatic shock events and their
indirect/direct impacts on mankind? I guess no. So I take the liberty to begin
with the above mentioned Vision and Mission statements. Wish that the world as
one community adopts the above mission and vision due to;
i)
Depletion of agricultural land: World over the land holdings for pursuance of
agricultural works is on the down slide due to deforestation activities that
seem to be penetrating into such agricultural areas too.
ii)
Climate changes: Side effects of such deforestation activities have lead to
serious climatic changes e.g. recent forest fires in the Amazon rain forests (a
natural reservoir well known for absorbing the earth’s total production of
carbon dioxide) have lead to global warming, steep rise in global temperatures
and unpredictable wind patterns. The causative effects have been manifested as
unpredictable rainfall to scanty rainfall or no rainfall with direct impacts
such as droughts and excess rainfall added with extensive glacier melting with
direct impacts such as floods. Summarizing, we have climatic events that have
been detrimental to many agricultural activities of late.
iii)
Population rise: An exponential rise in population world over has increased the
events of migration, riots, wars, etc. due to seeming shortages in the
availability of agricultural impacted products and a stiff competition to gain
foothold on such agricultural land resources, which are basic essentials for
the people and their livestock world over as against the large scale trend in urbanization
of rural land. The demarcation between haves and have not’s have been further
thickened.
iv)
Loss of germplasms: Due to the loss of ecotypes and landraces, loss of habitat
(such as rainforests) and increased urbanization as mentioned above, the
cumulative effects of them could be understood as loss of essential germplasms
and therefore severe shortages of the same required to locate wild relatives,
related species and new genes (especially dominant genes which may provide
resistance to diseases) and to sustain minimum future essential crop growth
with respect to Depletion of agricultural land, Climate changes and Population
rise and such conditions that may continue to prevail in the near future.
From the
above available background there emerges an urgent need for reversing the above
happenings world over so that the environment gets straightened out viz. to
sustain all green activities in an equilibrium state at least in the economic
slang wherein supply and demand would be equal (i.e. when the supply function
and demand function intersect) the ensuing economy would be said to be at
equilibrium. At this point, the allocation of such agricultural goods would be at
its most efficient because the amount of these goods being supplied would
exactly be the same as the amount of them being demanded. Thus, everyone
(individuals, firms or countries) would be satisfied with the current economic
condition. At the given price, suppliers could be selling all such goods that
they have produced and consumers would be getting all such goods that they are
demanding.
However, if
the above equilibrium were to straighten out the entire earth's environment
from further damage, then it becomes utmost important that the following economic
concepts are well understood and adhered viz.
1.The law of
demand
2.The law of
supply
3.Supply and
demand relationship
4.Disequilibrium
viz. excess supply, excess demand
5.Shifts vs.
Movement
i.e. these
above economic concepts when along with a global awakening to assertively turn
towards qualitative vegetarianism; a very important factor and shun
other not so necessary food habits seemingly could well become the turning
point towards not only undoing the already done deforestation activities but
could also help further locate the origin of lost crop plants through any
appropriate plant breeding programme/s (via. a plan of intended proceedings)
that would enable such germplasms (the living genetic resources such as seeds
or tissue that is maintained for the purpose of animal and plant breeding,
preservation and other research uses) resuscitation (revive or return/restore
to the old genetic life form) and maybe resurrection (coming to life or revival
from disuse to a higher and better life form).
Any
innovative approach worldwide towards use of a forever green kitchen catalyzed
by the economics/law of demand and supply may very well help to achieve a
forever green environment.
